Mailer Lite and new upstarts in the email space

In this series, we’re looking into various tech platforms for artists, within the context of how artist friendly they are.

Today, we’re continuing to look into email list tech platforms, and some new options in this space that might make a lot of sense for independent artists to consider.

Mailer Lite

Mailer Lite is one of the new upstarts in the email tech space. They’re promising a simpler, easier to use, more affordable approach to building an email list.

I like a lot of things about this platform:

  • the simple, easily understandable pricing structure.

  • the affordability at all levels: bigger size lists do cost more, but even the highest priced tiers are still quite reasonable in price when compared to the competition.

  • fully featured: you’re not getting a thin, crappy product. You’re getting most of the same key features as other email services provide, and many of those services can cost much more per month.

One of my favorite features is that you get more affordability at the small indie sized list level of 1,000-5,000 email subscribers.

That’s key! This makes it so much easier for the DIY artist to handle their own promotion affordably, and to get out from under the thumb of the many shady small and mid-level music promoters out there.

Here’s the Mailer Lite pricing page for 1,000 subscribers (prices current as of this writing and subject to change). Coming in cheaper than Mailchimp, with a very similar feature set, plus a lot more room to grow into than what Mailchimp currently offers.

Mailer Lite at 5,000 subscribers

Here’s the pricing page for 5,000 subscribers. If you’ve got 5k email subs as a small indie band, you’re in a really good place for building into a sustainable fan base. And, you can probably start generating a fair amount of buzz (and revenue) for your shows and merchandise sales all on your own, no promoter or label necessary:

At $35/month, that’s a pretty great deal. It’s less than $10/week, and if you were to split the costs between 4 members in a band you could get the price down to under $3/week per member.

Yet another example of the tools finally being there (and being affordable) for independent artists to get their work out themselves, outside of the label system entirely.
