Amazing Audio at Home Course Outline: Module 1

In this series, I’m going over what to expect inside Amazing Audio at Home: the course that teaches all of the steps to getting pro quality audio at home, using affordable gear. I’m covering each module in detail, one at a time.

I always recommend staying away from influencer-styled courses that teach a cookie-cutter “mix by numbers” approach. Audio work, like any other creative field, is about making creative decisions dynamically in real time, based on inputs that are constantly changing from project to project. Mixing to a specific set of numbers is too rigid of an approach to account for this, and it’s easy to end up with stilted, odd-sounding productions that conflict with the musical choices of the artist.

That’s why I teach artistic concepts and process, and how to apply that process in a variety of different creative situations, inside of my course. It’s super relevant if you’re a musician, aspiring audio engineer dipping their toes into the field, a content creator, or an aspiring filmmaker.

Welcome to the course! Start here!

This is an introductory video where I introduce myself, and walk you through the basics of how to get started. This video includes a general overview of each of the 5 modules, and some technical information on how to best use the online course system. I also recommend a short video from the Bonus lessons module, to give you a quick way to jump right in.

Who this course is for

This lesson covers the practical, real-world applications of the material you’re about to learn. Audio skills have wide-ranging application across a variety of different creative formats and situations.

How to use this course

This video covers how to best to work your way through all of the videos, from recommendations on the order to watch them in, to how regularly you’ll need to engage with the material to get maximum benefit from our time together.

Required materials

This video goes over some required materials you'll want to have on hand, in order to get the most out of the course material. There’s not a lot of gear required, and you don’t need to buy anything right away or use a lot of expensive equipment. It’s likely some software and headphones you’ve already got lying around will work fine to get started.

The music production workflow

This video takes a bird’s-eye view of the entire music production workflow, to give proper context to the specific information we’re about to lean, and to show how the course material fits into the bigger picture of making music.

The 3 requirements of a quality mix

In this video, I condense the technical requirements for getting to a high quality mix down into 3 primary bullet points, and go over how you can achieve each of these in the home studio setting. I also show applications, by asking you to consider where your personal home studio development sits in terms of the priority of these three items.

Module 1 Action Steps

The action steps provided in each module are critical pieces of homework; you can watch all of the videos in the world on a topic, but you won’t see lasting change until you take action on the information provided.

In this action step video, I ask you to consider further how to fill in gaps in the “three requirements” for your own home studio, in the most cost-effective manner possible. There’s two short assignments to work through to do this.
