Recording Degree Programs

I get asked about recording schools a fair amount, and anyone who’s talked to me personally probably knows I have strong, varied, and conflicting feelings on the subject.

Briefly, I am very supportive of the teachers and students in any trade school program, but generally think for-profit education is a bad idea. Particularly in an arts context, where achieving the means to pay back the costs of your education are highly uncertain.

But don’t take it from me-take it from the great Steve Albini!

Here’s a video where Steve lays out his feelings on this issue in an extremely eloquent, and well-reasoned manner:

His feelings mirror my own! A great watch!

With any large educational investment, you need to be thinking of how that money is going to be paid back.

Can the institution you’re considering demonstrate that they place a significant majority of their graduates in paid positions?

And, is a paid engineering position something you’re even looking for out of the program you’re considering? What’s the long game here, for your life?
