Noise During Recording: Part 1

Another fan requested series! We’ll be dealing with diagnosing and fixing noise issues in the home recording studio over the course of the next several articles.

With noise challenges, it’s very important to diagnose your problem correctly first, before attempting a solution.

Different types of noise in the studio

In audio, different types of noises all have different root causes, and different solutions to fix the problem. A solution for one type of noise may not work at all against a different type, so accurate diagnosis is an important starting point.

All of these different types of noise issues can also exist in combination with each other, which can make diagnosis tricky.

Here are some different types of noise you might run into:

1. External noise

2. Op amp noise

3. Ground loops

4. Instrument noise

5. AC line noise

6. RFI

Each of these different types of noise sounds different, and each has a different root cause. So, in addition to the book learning presented here, you’ll also need to experience troubleshooting these kinds of noise problems by ear.

Stay tuned, we’ll be digging deeper into all of these in the coming weeks!
